In this dual enrollment class, with three college credits from Florida International University, you will learn, grow and become inspired by classical music in western civilization. As you become a better educated and informed listener, you will also acquire the skills to incorporate some of these great, musical ideas into your own music or just enjoy listening to music on an enlightened level: with attention and perception.
This class is a semester course that will cover the elements of music, instruments of the orchestra, voice types and a succinct history of classical music in western civilization, including the most influential composers and their compositions.
Beginning with Ancient Greek and up to modern times, you will learn how classical music was used for religious, political and personal entertainment purposes. The invention of instruments, ensembles and various musical forms have directly contributed to our social, intellectual and emotional development. You will learn how classical music, through different periods of time, reflected the social context of that time in history and how this music influences music today. I sincerely hope that you will grow personally as a more attentive and appreciative listener and enjoy listening to classical music!
